Education Ministry seeks school project approval

The Education Ministry will tomorrow ask the Cabinet to approve a project to fund five state-assisted schools in the five southernmost provinces to support students affected by the unrest in the region.
The ministry plans to spend Bt292 million between 2007 and 2009 to set up the elementary and secondary schools, as well as to hire 305 teachers and 44 other school employees. The schools would accommodate 810 students, including 600 boarding students. The project was initiated under the Thaksin Shinawatra regime to support underprivileged children, orphans and students who have been affected by the violence in Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, Satun and Songkhla pro-vinces. The project aims to provide basic education to children in the provinces, improve the quality of their lives and instil patriotism. The former Cabinet had already approved the 2006 central budget of Bt700 million for the construction of the school buildings. The budget is being overseen by the military and the Rajaprajanigroh Foundation, which is under royal patronage.
