Granddaughter 'not raped as claimed'

The grandfather of a young schoolgirl who was allegedly raped by two schoolteachers at a school in Bangkok's Sai Mai district came forward yesterday to say that his granddaughter had never been raped, contrary to police claims.
Sompong Juman, 48, a janitor of Pracha Nukool School where the alleged rape and molestation took place, took his eight-year-old granddaughter to a press conference to announce that she had not been raped by the two teachers, Lorn Sorakanit, 56, and Pimol Chunsri, 48, as the police had claimed. He said Pavena Hongsakul, president of the Pavena Foundation for Women and Children, had asked for permission to allow his granddaughter to give information to police. When his granddaughter gave evidence in September he was not allowed to listen, but he learned from the girl that she had told the police she was not raped by the teachers, although the investigators concluded that she was one of the victims. "This is unfair, this tarnishes my granddaughter's reputation," Sompong said, adding that he would take the girl to forensic scientist Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunand for medical confirmation that the girl was still a virgin. Asked if he would sue the police, Sompong said he would have to consult senior people first. Meanwhile, a public prosecutor at the criminal lawsuit unit 9 office, who asked not to be named, said the girl had been included because the evidence indicated she was among the victims, despite her testimony that she had not been touched by the two teachers. The prosecutor also said four other students in the case had all said the girl was there with them when the alleged rape took place. The Criminal Court on Friday indicted the teachers on eight counts of sex offences for the alleged rape and molestation of six schoolgirls on several occasions from June 1 to August 10 this year, and set January 22 for a preliminary hearing.
