Constitution-drafting assembly :Selection committee to decide on role of unselected candidates

The committee to select the 2,000-strong constitution-drafting National People's Assembly (NPA), which will initially whittle itself down to 200 members, is to rule on whether to allow any of the remaining 1,800 to form a body promoting public awareness and knowledge of the law.
Committee chairman Supot Kaimuk told a seminar yesterday on the selection process in Ubon Ratchathani, attended by members of people's networks from nine northeastern provinces, that NPA applications would be accepted until November 21. The panel will hold similar seminars in Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen and Surat Thani.
LESE MAJESTE :Charges against Sonthi dropped The Office of the Attorney-General has decided to drop charges of lese majeste against media tycoon Sondhi Limthongkul and Kom Chad Luek editor Chaliew Kongtuek, a spokesman said yesterday. The agency's decision is in reaction to the public outcry after public prosecutors filed the charges against the two men, said spokesman Atthapol Yaisawang. He said conflict over the matter could threaten national security and peace, so the attorney-general had exercised his powers to order the charges to be withdrawn. The charges will be formally withdrawn next week, he said.
LAND ENCROACHMENT :OAG orders Vatana's prosecution Attorney-General Pachara Yutithamdamrong has ordered the prosecution of former deputy interior minister Vatana Asavahame for alleged involvement in encroachment on public land in Phang Nga. The Office of the Attorney-General (OAG) will submit the case to the Criminal Court, inspector-general Atapol Yaisawang announced yesterday. In August the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) asked Pachara to prosecute Vatana, citing strong evidence against the former minister.
