In Brief :Rice exports to reach 7.5m tonnes for year, says Foreign Trade Dept

The Foreign Trade Department reported yesterday that the country's total rice export volume reached 6.11 million tonnes in the first 10 months this year and predicted that exports would reach 7.5 million tonnes worth US$2.34 billion (Bt85.8 billion) for the entire year.

Total export value reached $2.06 billion in the first 10 months. The average export price was $337 per tonne compared with $309 in the same period last year.

 In the same period, jasmine rice accounted for 32.15 per cent of the total, or 2.03 million tonnes worth $808 million.

More THAI flights here and abroad

Thai Airways International on Tuesday increased its weekly domestic flights from Bangkok to Phuket from 77 to 82.

The increase is part of its route extension and adjustment plans to cope with an expected increase in air passenger traffic during the northern winter period. The extra flights will continue until March 24.

Service on the Bangkok-Perth-Phuket-Bangkok route will also increase from two to three flights weekly, as will flights from Bangkok to Krabi from 24 to 28 weekly.

Flights on the Phuket and Krabi routes are aboard Airbus A300-600 or Boeing 737-400 aircraft.

THAI has also increased its number of flights to Chiang Mai, from 72 to 77 weekly, in support of the Royal Flora Ratchapruek 2006 plant and flower show now taking place in the northern city.

New international flight routes introduced over the same period include service to Johannesburg in South Africa (three flights a week) and Hyderabad, Bodhgaya, Varanasi in India (three flights a week).

International routes to Bangkok from Europe increasing in frequency starting December 1 include: Stockholm-Bangkok (from six to seven weekly flights), Rome-Bangkok (six to seven), Munich-Bangkok (five to seven), Madrid-Bangkok (four to six), Moscow-Bangkok (three to four) and Zurich-Bangkok (six to seven).

The total number of flights from New York and Los Angeles will also increase, from 7 to 10 weekly.

United launches one stop to Dulles

United Airlines, the world's largest trans-Pacific passenger carrier, recently launched its first one-stop service via Tokyo between Bangkok and Washington DC's Dulles International Airport.

The company said passengers from Thailand arriving at Dulles in mid-afternoon have the choice of same-day connections to 49 onward destinations via 137 flights.

"The service from Thailand's capital will provide customers with a convenient new option to America's

capital and cities up and down the US East Coast," said Eric Wilson, general manager of United Airlines, Thailand.
