Danger lurks in humble krathong

One of the less obvious dangers that could arise from excess flooding this year could come from Thailand's annual water festival, Loy Kratong.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation yesterday warned of the danger of higher water levels that increase the risk of accidents and fires during Loy Krathong on Sunday.

Director general Anucha Mokkawet said owners of houses along rivers and canals should be on guard for possible fire outbreaks or accidents caused by flames from candles on the krathongs floating too close to their wooden structures.

The department has delivered warnings to provinces in the Central Region and Bangkok, which were badly affected by floods.

"The higher level of water could bring floating krathongs into houses near the river, and travelling by boat through crowded areas will be more dangerous," Anucha said.
