CNS chief says TRT in talks over 'undercurrent'

Council for National Security (CNS) chairman General Sonthi Boonyaratglin said yesterday the Thai Rak Thai Party had contacted him to discuss the "political undercurrent" problem.
"We have to reach an understanding about what the problem is,'' he said.
He also confirmed that officials will today televise its achievements over the past month since it overthrew the Thaksin government. The move comes after the CNS was criticised for failing to produce any fruitful results, including punishing corrupt politicians. "We will have to explain what we have done and what problems we have faced, especially in examining asset and corruption cases in which we need more information to prosecute them. Right now we do not have enough [information]" he said. However, Thai Rak Thai caretaker leader Chaturon Chaisang denied that he or his party had contacted the CNS for talks. He said he had only heard that party spokesmen in local areas wanted to send representatives to hold talks. "But there has not been any contact. If there was a contact, it would have just been a claim. Other party leaders and I have no knowledge about it. I cannot think what we would negotiate with the CNS about. We have followed the law,'' he said. Chaturon also denied reports that deposed premier Thaksin Shinawatra will return to the country tomorrow, saying his understanding was that Thaksin will not come back soon. "Whenever he comes back, the party will not use it as a political issue,'' he said. Meanwhile Privy Council President Gen Prem Tinsulanonda refused to discuss last week's controversial meeting between him and Thaksin's wife Pojaman.
