Drop the EC a line

The Election Commission has opened PO Box 17 at Rong Muang post office to receive petitions and tip-offs relating to its performance, its public-relations director Peerapong Pairin said yesterday.

"EC chairman Apichart Sukhagganond has received many anonymous letters at his home about work-related problems, so it is necessary to handle the complaints through official channels," he said.

Peerapong said many complaints and tip-offs were about suspicious activities involving EC officials seen to be close to the previous EC and its chairman Vasana Puemlarp. To clean up the electoral process and eliminate favouritism, the incumbent EC wants to solicit pertinent information on office infighting and the disturbing legacy of its predecessors, he said.

In another development, Lt-General Chaipat Theera-

thamrong, a job applicant for the position of EC secretary-general has withdrawn his application on the grounds that he is unavailable for immediate appointment.
