PM's quick mercy visit

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont made an unscheduled trip to Songkhla yesterday to visit monks and soldiers who were injured in a bomb attack in Narathiwat last weekend

Government spokesman Yongyuth Mayalarp said: "The prime minister decided to take the trip to Songkhla without announcement because of security reasons. And he did not want to disturb [local] officials to receive him. He left Bangkok at 5.45pm."

Surayud went to Prince of Songkhla Hospital to visit five monks and two soldiers who were injured by a bomb explosion in Narathiwat on Sunday. A soldier who was in the protection unit for the monks was killed in the attack.

Surayud returned to Bangkok by a Thai Airways flight at 9.30pm.
