Floods to hit pork prices

Pork prices are expected to rise early next month, because heavy flooding in central Thailand has reduced the supply of pigs.
The floods have damaged the main pig-raising provinces of Nakhon Sawan, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Angthong, Suphan Buri and Ayutthaya. But there have been no official reports of losses yet as breeders cannot enter their farms to assess the damages. Pig farms in the provinces have been damaged and thousands of pigs and piglets have drowned, Surachai Sutthitham, president of the Swine Raisers Association of Thailand, said yesterday. "Some farmers have lost everything and need urgent assistance," he said. He called on pig breeders whose farms were damaged to inform the association at (02) 674 1190-1. The association will use the information to assess industry losses and seek compensation from the Livestock Development Department, he said.
