Surayud to boost Cabinet numbers

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont will soon add more deputy ministers to his government to help alleviate the workload, a source said yesterday.
In the present government only five ministries - Foreign, Agriculture, Interior and Industry - have deputy ministers while 14 others do not. "For the time being, it is likely that about six deputy ministers will be appointed to help the ministers. Many ministers have said they can't handle the variety of work without deputies," the source said. Moreover, as the government will be in office for only one year, they believe the appointment of deputies is necessary. As an example, the source said the government will soon have to deal with the post-flood reconstruction, including road and house renovations, as well as rehabilitation of affected agriculture areas. It is expected that Surayud will consider the additions to his government after delivering his government's policy to the National Legislative Assembly on Friday. Meanwhile, another source said it was likely that former Thai ambassador Surapong Jayanama will be appointed as the premier's deputy secretary-general for foreign affairs.
