Govt keen to act

PM's Office Minister Thirapat Serirangsan said yesterday that the government was determined to achieve things, even though it is to stay in power only for a short term.
He was responding to Thai Rak Thai Party caretaker leader Chaturon Chaisang, who said the government should not have "commitments" in its policies but only build a foundation. "No matter what kind of government and how long it runs the country, it must create achievements," Thirapat said. "If the government stays seven days but makes a great achievement, that is better than the government that stays four years but damages the country,'' he said. He said several ministers had agreed that the government should maintain the good policies of the Thaksin government or better them under four principles: everything done should be transparent, economically sound, efficient and have moral integrity. Government policies should focus on creating public participation in drafting the constitution, on reforming the justice system and on instilling morality in society. "All government policies must be put into use by this government and not for the next government,'' he said. The policies will be disclosed to the public over two days this coming week so that the government can get to know the public reaction. The government will then spell out its policies on Friday. Meanwhile, Thirapat said he had instructed officials at the Secretariat of the Cabinet to start videotaping of Cabinet meetings after getting a nod from the prime minister.
