Review of university admissions

A public hearing on the university admissions system is to be held by the new education minister in a bid to end the prolonged controversy over the procedure.
The conclusions of the hearing are to be enacted in the 2008 admissions system. Education Minister Wijit Srisa-an said the hearing would be open to high school students, university students, parents and examination operators. It will be held urgently as the ministry is required to declare any changes to the admissions system one year in advance. "The change is unable to take effect in the upcoming 2007 admission as students wouldn't have enough time to prepare themselves for it," said Wijit. Issues that will be discussed at the hearing include the weighting of the grade-point average (GPA) and cumulative grade-point average (GPAX) in the admissions system, whether the Ordinary National Education Test (O-Net) should be held once or twice a year, and who should operate the Advanced National Education Test (A-Net). Currently, O-Net and A-Net scores account for 70 per cent of university admission applications while GPA and GPAX scores make up the rest.
