Woranich takes the honours

Young golfer Woranich Chanjaratpong took centre stage with a fine performance to claim the Flight A gross score title in the 11th leg of the Nation Hole-in-One tournament at Muang Kaew Golf Course on Wednesday.

The Nation Hole-in-One tournament is the biggest amateur golf event with total prizes worth around Bt30 million for the participants. The third edition of the year-long contest is being held on the third Wednesday of each month from December 2005. The champions from each category plus the lucky draw winner from each qualifying event of the tournament are eligible for the Nation's Swing Challenge at the end of this year.

Playing with no handicap, Woranich turned in an 83 (42-41) card to take the top honours, while the Flight A net score title went to Teerawan Somsuwan, a 12-handicapper, who finished with a 73 (45-40).

In Flight B, non-handicapper Parinda Domornsak clinched the gross score crown with an aggregate of 90 (44-46), while Jirasak Silapong with a 16.8 handicap was the net score winner after chalking up a total of 73.2 (44-46).

Chaiwat Puengpho, playing with no handicap, won the Flight C gross score title with a total of 92 (45-47). Wanchai Tosomboon, with a 24 handicap, took the net score crown with an aggregate of 74 (52-45).

The next event will take place at the same venue on November 15. For more information, call Nation Multimedia Group's Customer Services Centre tel 0-2340-1575.

Harrington falters

n Padraig Harrington's hopes of becoming European No 1 suffered a potentially fatal blow in the first round of the Mallorca Classic yesterday.

Harrington slumped to an opening 77, seven over par, at Pula Golf Club to lie 11 shots off the clubhouse lead held by fellow Irishman Gary Murphy, Sweden's Niclas Fasth and South African Andrew McLardy.

The 35-year-old trails Paul Casey by £147,900 in the Order of Merit with just two events remaining but added this tournament to his schedule at the last minute following his victory in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship earlier this month.

Victory here would take Harrington to the top of the money list but the Ryder Cup star looks more likely to miss the halfway cut and travel to Valderrama next week for the season-ending Volvo Masters in need of a top-three finish to have a chance of overhauling Casey.

"I didn't play well and a change of wind direction from what I had practised in put some doubt in my mind," said Harrington, who drove out of bounds on the seventh en route to a triple-bogey seven and inward half of 41. "I made a few bad swings and it knocked me off my stride."
