Violence has continued in the deep South with suspected Muslim militants killing two villagers, including a local headman. A bomb also exploded, critically injuring three soldiers.
Late on Wednesday night in Narathiwat's Sungai Padi district, a village headman Ajisata Mahama, 41, was shot dead in front of his house as he returned from a local teashop. At least three gunmen hid in the forested area opposite the house and fired 20 rounds from M-16 and AK-47 assault rifles. Ajisata died at scene. Separately, a 52-year-old former health official was shot dead as he travelled home in Narathiwat. Around the same time in Tak Bai district in the same province, a roadside bomb went off when a group of soldiers drove past in a Humvee. Three soldiers were critically injured. Investigating officials said the 15kg hand-made bomb was believed to have been triggered by a mobile phone. The bomb's impact left a huge crater and destroyed the Humvee. The attack came as Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont got back from a visit to Kuala Lumpur. Surayud said yesterday Malaysia had offered its support in resolving the southern conflict. "Malaysia will not interfere in our domestic affairs but will support Thailand, particularly in solving problems in the South," he told reporters. The Nation Narathiwat
