Action plan for SME licensing

Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will find it easier to apply for their business licences if the Industry Ministry can resolve the overlap of regulations and the complexity of application procedures.
Deputy Industry Minister Piyabutr Cholvijarn said at a discussion entitled "Action Plan for SME Promotion" yesterday that the authorities were considering resolving the problems to open the way for the establishment of SMEs.He said some regulations that slow SME investments might be lifted. "We will amend the replicated laws as soon as possible, and some new arrangements are expected within the period of this government," he said, adding that the environmental laws will also be reconsidered. Moreover, the Industrial Works Department has started the process of facilitating SMEs by granting a licence to new firms via an electronic licensing system. Now, there are approximately 600,000 new SMEs applying under the electronic system. Piyabutr said the SME sector was the key to developing Thailand's industries because it is the major factor in the supply chain. The government will focus on developing the main supply chain into a value chain. It also expected to set up industry clusters. "The government will modify the concepts for the Bangkok Fashion City project and the Thai Food to the World project so that SME sectors, particularly the food, textile and garment industries, will have greater participation and earn benefits from these projects," the minister said.
