FRIDAY BUG
Winds of change

On Tuesday evening, some reporters got wind of an impending change at the top of Siam Commercial Bank, the third-largest in the country, as president Jada Wattanasiritham's term was due to expire in January.
They rushed to SCB's head office, waiting for some bank officer to confirm who would become the next president. Although they already had a name in mind - senior executive vice president Kannikar Chalitaporn - they were not definite about it.Before Jada and executive chairman Vichit Suraphongchai came out of the boardroom, Kannikar was the first to meet reporters. To extract the truth, experienced news hounds know exactly how to employ dirty tricks. They just smiled and straightforwardly told Kannikar: "Congratulations!" Kannikar smiled back and said: "Oh, how did you know about it? It's too soon." Reporters then asked: "When would you take the new job?" Then, probably realising this might be some ploy of the journos, she said: "Oh, I really can't talk about it right now. Khunying Jada is still here [as president]." Well, there's nothing to worry about here. Many high-profile news sources are used to being trapped by reporters. But Kannikar would never be deceived by how hard her staff work for the bank. She once told reporters that all the bank's employees should be able to sell. They shouldn't just do the traditional job of a bank teller but also take on the marketer's job. "If they can't do it or don't know how to do it, I will show them. Then, if they are still not able to do it, they might get transferred to some other position," she said. So, Friday Bug would like to warn SCB's workers that they had better try harder. "Khun KC" really means it. This is reflected in the bank's much-improved retail-banking business over the past three years under her stern eye.
