Meechai, Prasong recruit assistants

Meechai Ruchuphan and Prasong Soonsiri, two leading candidates for the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) Speaker's seat, have formed their own teams of deputies to assist them should they win the post, a source said yesterday.
Meechai had asked General Charan Kullavanija and Pochanee Thanawaranit to be his deputies. Meanwhile, Prasong had asked Chai-Anan Samudavanija and Sungsidh Piriyarangsan as his deputies as well as another female deputy to support him. The source said Meechai was still ahead of Prasong as he was supported by General Winai Phattiyakul, the secretary-general of the Council for National Security (CNS) and some Pre-Cadet Class 6, the same class as CNS chairman General Sonthi Boonyaratglin. NLA member Waemahadee Waedaoh said Muslim NLA members agreed that the Speaker must be a good person who promotes peace in the country and must not be a cause for complaint by any group in society. Another NLA member, Sombat Thamrongthanyawong said the NLA Speaker must be a senior person and must be respected by the NLA members who were mostly experts in various fields. However, it was not necessary that the Speaker be a legal expert, he said.
