Carrefour targets BIG & BIH fairs

Carrefour, the world's second-largest chain of discount stores, is sending 20 executives from six countries to attend the 22nd Bangkok International Gift Fair (BIG) and the Bangkok International Houseware Fair (BIH) to select Thai products for its Thai Fair sale in 217 branches around the world next year.
The executives arrived from France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Taiwan and China yesterday to attend the BIG and BIH fairs, which are being held at Impact Muang Thong Thani's Challenger Hall.Philippe Broianigo, managing director of Carrefour Thailand, said the Thai Fair would be Carrefour's biggest-ever promotion of Thai products. While attending the BIG and BIH, Carrefour staff will receive assistance from the Export Promotion Department (EPD). Carrefour expects its representatives to select Thai gifts and home decoration items and conduct negotiations with manufacturers and exporters worth several million baht. The discount store foresees a bright future for Thai products, which it described as being of good quality, if it can maintain a consistent marketing plan. Since 2000, Carrefour (Thailand) has exported over Bt3.2 billion worth of Thai products to branches around the world. Meanwhile, EPD director-general Chantra Purnariksha said the department could not yet set a figure for the expected growth of Thai exports next year, but warned that it could be lower than this year.
