Thailand supports UN sanction on N Korea

Thailand would abide by the UN Security Council's sanction imposed against North Korea over its nuclear test, viewing it as a necessary step aiming at securing a long-term peace and stability in the Korean peninsula.
The country regarded the sanction as a legitimate response by the international community, citing "provocative act of an underground nuclear test by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on October 9", according to the Foreign Ministry's statement issued Tuesday. Thailand wishes to urge North Korea, as a UN member, to respect the UN resolution and fully cooperate with the international community; in particular, by abandoning all its nuclear weapons and existing nuclear programmes, the statement said. North Korea should also abide with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Safeguards Agreement as well as returning to the six-party talk without any precondition. Thailand remains fully committed to cooperating with the international community to ensure swift and full compliance with all the concerned measures imposed by the Resolution. Thailand also reiterates its call for peaceful solution to the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, through diplomatic negotiations, read the statement. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said Foreign Ministry will host meetings with other ministries concerned, including ministries of commerce, industry, information and technology and natural resources, to workout the implementations in accordance the UN resolutions.
