Charter tribunal outlines priorities
The nine-member Constitution Tribunal Monday acknowledged 31 pending cases in its docket, including the alleged electoral fraud ahead of April's annulled election, punishable by party dissolution.
"The tribunal will adhere to good governance, transparency and fairness," its secretarygeneral, Paiboon Warahapaitoon, said.Before starting to preside over cases, the tribunal will finalise its procedures for judicial review on Thursday. It is tasked with ruling on constitutional disputes during the drafting of the new charter. It is expected to assign priority to the electoral fraud case involving five parties, including Thai Rak Thai and the Democrats. The litigation stemmed from the alleged bankrolling of small parties to contest the April 2 election. The five parties submitted their respective defence arguments before the military coup on September 19. The electoral fraud case is ready to proceed once the tribunal sets a date to launch its inquiry.
