Now defunct southern centre to be revived

Council of National Security (CNS) and Interior Ministry met on Monday to discuss the revival of the now defunct Southern Border Provinces.

Administration Centre (SBPAC) that was dissolved in mid 2001 by the former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

CNS's chairman General Sonthi Boonyaratglin said the new body will be a civilianled agency and will be called the Southern Boarder Province Development Centre.

The centre will fall under the Interior Ministry and will have the mandate to look peace, reconciliation and development in the Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, Satun and four districts of Songkhla.

Before the now defunct centre covered only three provinces; Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat," CNS Chairman Gen Sonthi Bunyaratglin said Monday.

It's not clear how the militaryled Southern Boarder Provinces PeaceBuilding Command (SBPPC), that was initiated by Thaksin two years ago, will fit in this scheme.

Sonthi said the SBPPC would be readjust along with the new agency but the mandate has yet to be finalised.
