Rivers, dams overflow across the Northeast

Sangwien Srithong, 75, lives alone in her flooded home in Ayutthaya’s Bang Ban district with water now reaching the second floor.
Communities battled flooding across the Northeast yesterday with Chaiyaphum, Nong Bua Lamphu, Ubon Ratchathani and Buri Ram all affected.

In Chaiyaphum, a forest flood hit four villages, inundating 63 homes and nearly 1,000 rai of farmland under about 50 centimetres of water, an official said.

After a week of continuous rain, the Huai Sai Reservoir and Lam Khan Phu Dam began to overflow late on Wednesday night. The four flooded villages were located between Bamnet Narong district and Sub Yai sub-district, Bamnet Narong district chief Wirat Jamraspong said.

Local officials gave relief bags to affected villagers and made quick estimates of the damage, while urging residents in flood-prone areas to get ready to evacuate, he said.

Sok Hoikham villager Suchat Eiamla-ong, 61, said a tide of water nearly a metre-deep hit their homes during the night, forcing people to run for their lives. The forest run-off descended into the Chi River, after causing about Bt1 million in damage to his property. About 100 pigs were swept away and four fishponds and 300 eaglewood trees destroyed.

In Ubon Ratchathani, Governor Suthee Markboon said the Mun River and canals overflowed, submerging riverside homes. Some 604 families in Ubon town and 137 in Warin Chamrap were affected.

Suthee said he ordered the Pak Mun Dam's eight gates to be opened to drain the water out. Officials evacuated residents from low riverside areas and gave them with relief bags. Some 104 villages in 11 districts were flooded, Suthee said, with 7,690 people affected, and 79,241 rai of farms and 53 roads damaged.

Nong Bua Lamphu was also hit, even though the rain had stopped for three days.

Floodwater from the Loei River submerged 50 riverside homes and more than 20,000 rai of "ripe" rice fields in Muang, Na Klang and Si Bun Ruang districts.

In Buri Ram, nine reservoirs were full, forcing officials to release water - that flooded 77,700 rai of farms.
