Tour boats anger residents

Flood victims along the Bangkok Noi Canal yesterday called on authorities to stop tourist boats from cruising through their community.
"The boats send waves that are threatening to damage our house," Pracha Chatsuwan, 60, said. He also complained that some tourist guides and tourists apparently laughed when they saw some of the houses being shaken by the floodwaters as they cruised by. "I am not complaining about the flood. I am complaining about the lack of understanding from some people," the elderly man said. Prawat Sudprasertsilp, another resident of the Santichon Songkroh community, said he worried whenever a passing boat shook his flooded house. "Sometimes the floor is lifted up," he said. Somchat Srithong-on, 43, said his house was knee-deep in floodwater and his furniture and refrigerator had been damaged. "But my real concerns are about my elderly mother. She is too old to move around. Now we have to live with floods," he said. Relief items and medicines have reached the flood victims. On Wednesday night, a seven-year-old girl drowned in the Chao Phya River. Witnesses said the girl was strolling along the riverbank in Bangkok's Khlong San district when a passing cargo boat caused a big wave that swept her away. Police called on people to beware of the danger from passing boats.
