Assembly list 'ready'

A list of 250 people to be appointed to the National Legislative Assembly was submitted for royal approval yesterday, said a source familiar with the matter.
General Winai Phattiyakul, secretary-general of the Council for National Security (CNS), handed the list to the Office of His Majesty's Principal Private Secretary in the morning, according to the source. The assembly members were appointed by the CNS and include high-ranking bureaucrats, military officers, former civil servants and retired generals, as well as experts from various fields and media representatives, the source said. Meanwhile, some 30 leading activists yesterday petitioned the CNS not to interfere in the appointment of the speaker of the Assembly. They specifically reminded the CNS to refrain from backing legal expert Meechai Ruchuphan, who is a top contender for the position. "Civic groups deem it inappropriate for Meechai to assume the position of speaker because he is seen as an undemocratic figure," activist Rosana Tositrakul said. The Nation
