Police told to assist

Metropolitan Police commissioner Wiroj Chantrarungsri yesterday ordered police to assist flood victims in the capital, especially with traffic flow and providing security.

His order came after severe flooding hit several parts of Bangkok on Tuesday, including major areas such as Silom, Siam Square and Asoke Road. The floodwater paralysed traffic, with many motorists stuck for several hours before they were able to reach home.

Wiroj yesterday convened a meeting of traffic police to tackle traffic snarls in future inundations of the city. "We have formed 230 teams to take charge. All teams have the necessary equipment," he said.

Wiroj said the Office of Vocational Education had agreed to dispatch students with training in electronics to assist flood victims alongside community police in the capital.

"They are out there and in action. They relocate electrical appliances and electrical wiring to keep them out of floodwater," Wiroj said.

Wiroj said flood victims could call 191 or send an MMS to 90062 to ask for help.
