Don't soil the water!

People affected by the flooding have been warned not to defecate in the water, as this could cause outbreaks of waterborne diseases, the Public Health Ministry said yesterday.

So far nearly a quarter of a million people have fallen ill. Half have suffered rashes and symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease.

Health Minister Mongkol Na Songkhla and ministry executives went to Nonthaburi yesterday to hand out 5,000 relief bags and medical supplies. They also gave out 5,000 black plastic bags for flood-affected residents to use if toilets were flooded.

Mongkol said health officials had been instructed to watch for water-borne diseases including leptospirosis, conjunctivitis and diarrhoea.
