PM visits strongholds of TRT Friday

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont will Friday visit two northeastern provinces, Buri Ram and Sakhon Nakhon, the stronghold of the Thai Rak Thai Party, amid a growing fear his government would scrap some social programmes introduced by Thaksin government.
Surayud plans to meet community leaders to ensure that his government will not overlook their needs and that programmes on public health and rural development for their region will continue to be his government's top priority, government's spokesman Yongyuth Maiyalarp said.
"The prime minister will explain to the community leaders to make them understand that his government's policies would not be different from Thaksin government and that we will continue to give priorities to the rural development," he said.
Both provinces were strongholds of ousted Thaksin government. Newin Chidchop, a close aide to ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was MP of Buri Ram for many years.
Many villagers from both provinces had joined pro-Thaksin rallies in the provinces and in Bangkok.
