At the interim government's first Cabinet meeting yesterday, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont told his ministers to apply the principles of transparency, fairness, thriftiness and efficiency to their work.
Government spokesman Yongyuth Mayalarp said Cabinet ministers, who were sworn in before His Majesty the King on Monday, were told that the principles should be applied to all government projects involving their ministries. "The prime minister stressed that in the short period to be overseen by this government, Cabinet members don't need to scrap all current projects. Many projects implemented by the previous government are good and should continue. However, ministry executives have to apply the [four] principles to those projects," Yongyuth said. The Cabinet agreed to assign Deputy Prime Minister and Industry Minister Kosit Panpiemras to head a working team to draft the government's policy statement for presentation to the National Legislative Assembly. The assembly, consisting of no more than 250 members and acting as the House of Representatives, will be appointed soon. At yesterday's meeting, the prime minister also instructed his ministers to integrate related projects involving different ministries in order to save time, as they will have only one year in office, the spokesman said. The new government will focus on "leading the country back to a merit-based system", Yongyuth said. He added that the prime minister also expressed concern the world community might not have a good understanding of the principle of sufficiency economy initiated by His Majesty the King. Therefore, the two deputy prime ministers, Kosit and MR Pridiyathorn Devakula, who is also finance minister, were assigned to help improve overseas understanding of the principle.
