Customs seize smuggled crocodiles

Customs Department seized Wednesday about 200 endangered crocodiles smuggled in from Cambodia and destined to Chinese pots.

The reptiles were seized on a tip in Sri Racha in Chonburi provinces. "They were being smuggled for export to China," Customs Department Director General Sathit Limpongphan said.

Sathit said this was the first time officers had seized crocodiles from a neighbouring country. The crocodile meats were popular among Chinese as they were believed to help enhance men's sexual potency.

The customs department has focused more on wild trade this year and have seized other endangered species, he added.

The crocodiles, worth about Bt600,000, are to be transferred to the Royal Forestry Department.
