Industry officials' wish list

Industry Ministry officials have a host of issues they want to bring up with the incoming minister.

They will first ask the minister to approve a plan to float sugar prices. That would first require removing sugar from the government's list of items under price control, said Chakramon Phasukavanich, permanent secretary of the ministry. But it will ask to keep in place the revenue-sharing proportion of 70 per cent to cane farmers and 30 per cent to factories.

In addition, officials plan to ask the next incumbent to approve an emergency plan to boost investor confidence.

Chakramon said some foreign investors did not understood the concept of the highly touted "sufficiency economy" and how it would affect the policies of the Board of Investment (BoI).

The new government announced that its economic agenda would be based on the sufficiency model, which many quarters have trouble describing.

He said that it would be satisfactory if the BoI could approve Bt400 billion worth of investment privileges this year versus the original target of Bt500 billion.

Chakramon will also submit to the new minister a study on the impact of free-trade agreements on industry.
