Japan smash Thais to smithereens

[VOLLEYBALL] The Thai girls failed to stop the Japanese onslaught yesterday and went down in straight sets before a crowd of 3,500 at The Mall Nakhon Ratchasima's MCC Hall.

The fired-up Japanese, who are yet to lose a single set to any team in the 13th Asian Women's Juniors Under-19 Volleyball Championships, seized their chances against the off-form Thais, who were below-par in serving and smashing.

After snatching the opener 25-18, Japan, who finished second to China in the Colombo edition in Sri Lanka two years ago, silenced Thai supporters with their scintillating blocks, splendid spikes and dazzling jump serves to win the next two sets 25-15 25-14 and the match.

The convincing victory over Thailand put Japan on top of Group E in the round-robin quarter-finals, relegating the hosts to the second spot.

New Zealand came from behind to beat Australia 22-25 25-17 25-22 26-24 to finish third in Group E. The Aussies came fourth. "My girls played badly today. They made too many mistakes, especially in serving and receiving the serves. We were no match for the Japanese, who were quite consistent," said Thai head coach Pollawat Toomanee.

"They excelled in all departments, while my girls still have many things to improve. They were nervous and lost their hearts and minds after trailing them by two sets."

Thailand take on South Korea in their last match of round-robin quarter-finals tomorrow.

Meanwhile, South Korea, who lost to China and Chinese Taipei earlier, thrashed lacklustre Vietnam 25-12 25-9 25-21 to come third in Group F, leaving the Vietnamese in fourth position. Reigning champs China tamed Taiwan in a three-set battle to top Group F yesterday, while the losers were in second place.

Earlier, India overcame a determined challenge from Indonesia to win the five-set thriller 22-25 25-21 28-30 25-23 15-13.

Only two matches in the 9th-12th classification round are played today, while teams in the quarter-finals enjoy a rest day.
