TRT vows huge rally despite assembly ban

The Thai Rak Thai Party vowed to hold a general assembly of key party figures and 14 million members on the day the Constitution Court passes a verdict on the party dissolution case, despite the ban on political gatherings of more than five people, deputy spokesman Sutin Klungsaeng said.

"If the coup-makers have democracy in their hearts they have to listen to people's voices. They should give a chance for voters of our party to express their opinions to us when the court's verdict is announced," he said, adding that the party was looking for a place to organise the meeting.

He said he thought the dissolution ruling would only be effective on paper, and would be impossible in reality as the party still had so many supporters.

Suthin said the Thai Rak Thai Party would remains a force - whether former leader Thaksin Shinawatra returned to the leader's seat or not - because it was an institution belonging to the people.

Meanwhile, Election Commission chairman Apichart Sukhaggananda said he hadn't received any resignation letters from Thaksin or Thai Rak Thai executive members.

Jatuporn Prompan, deputy spokesman for Thai Rak Thai, said he was waiting for former deputy leader Chaturon Chaisang's reply as to whether he would accept the caretaker leader post after another former deputy leader, Sudarat Keyuraphan, declined.

He said Chaturon was more suitable than Sudarat as he had a good image of fighting for democracy and against dictators. "If Sudarat becomes our leader she may be persecuted by the assets probe panel," he said.

When asked about Privy Council President General Prem Tinsulan-onda's speech on Wednesday, in which he said Thailand had people like Hitler who were greedy and made people fight, Jatuporn said Hitler was a dictator who committed crimes against humanity and ended his life by committing suicide, so whoever acts as Hitler must be condemned.

"It is not right to use force to conquer one's opponents. Anyone who uses unfair justice is a dictator. If they do that how they can achieve reconciliation?" he said.
