New airport blamed for damage and man's injury

Suvarnabhumi Airport is taking a toll on residents living nearby after only one week of operation.

They are complaining about extremely loud noise during take-off and landing by aircraft and property damage caused by turbulence from jet engines.

An elderly man, buzzed by loud noise while sitting outside his house, fell off a chair and injured his arm during the final test of a runway on September 15.

Jutharat Janthorn, a resident of Rom Ruedee estate, said her father Niphon now had infections in the wound. She has filed a complaint with Lat Krabang police requesting an inquiry into the incident. She is also planning to file a lawsuit demanding compensation from Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT).

Jutharat said her 72-year-old father asked her once: "How much longer will you lock me in this room and try to kill me with the noise?"

"The question made me feel very bad and I am considering moving away from here," she said.

Suradej Benjakijkul, head of residents living on the estate, said roof tiles were falling off every day due to the turbulence. "The airport staff told me to advance repair costs and they would pay me compensation, but they never did," he added.

The turbulence also caused roof tiles to fall from a nearby Buddhist temple. Suradej said more than 10 housing estates near the airport had called on the AOT to work out solutions to the noise problem or to pay compensation for those affected or for homes belonging to those who want to relocate.

"The AOT never gives us any answer about what they will do with our requests," he added.

Ratchanee Kaewprasert said flooding was more regular in her Kheha Nakhon 2 Estate after the airport was built. The airport area, formerly known as Nong Ngu Hao (Cobra Swamp), is located in a vast swamp serving as a natural catchment area for rainwater.

She said she felt as if she was a second-grade citizen. "I feel I am in similar trouble to those living in the South who have no peace," she said.

Ekkachai Singha said his newborn child was being cared for by relatives elsewhere because the noise was too loud and the baby would cry all night.
