Life term for school shooting

The Buri Ram provincial court yesterday handed a life sentence to a teacher who shot his wife - another teacher - dead in front of her young pupils in February.
It also ordered him to pay Bt580,660 in compensation to the victim's family. Theerasak Charoensiri, 47, was initially sentenced to death for killing his 37-year-old wife Kanya Charoensiri - a kindergarten teacher at Ban Khok Saeng School in Satuk district - and illegal possession of a gun and carrying a gun in a public place. However, his confession was deemed useful to the case and prompted the court to cut his punishment to life in jail. The court heard that Kanya found out about Theerasak having a mistress and filed for divorce. This prompted Theerasak to distribute obscene photos of his wife in revenge, which led to Kanya filing a complaint with police over his actions. Theerasak had threatened his wife to get her to drop the lawsuit but she refused. This had enraged him and led to him shooting her on February 16. The plaintiff's lawyer Thavorn Chansom said he was content with the ruling because the case had had a serious impact on society and tarnished the image of Thai teachers. Theerasak was detained in Buri Ram Prison and given 30 days to appeal.
