Philips switches on LED unit

Philips Electronics (Thailand) Ltd has set up a new unit to light up Thailand with its new light-emitting diodes after successful forays into China and Hong Kong.

Thanakorn Wongwises, general manager of Philip's lighting division, said yesterday that in the beginning the company would target companies that wanted to decorate their indoor or outdoor areas. Philips will market its LEDs through its existing dealers and will eventually penetrate the consumer market.

LEDs have life spans of 50,000 to 100,000 hours compared to 20,000 hours of fluorescent lights.

Philips last year acquired Lumiled, a LED manufacturer, for Bt38 billion, to expand its LED market globally and to strengthen its manufacturing operations.

The LED unit is the sixth in Philips' lighting business. The other five are lamps, lighting, electronics, luminaire, automotive and special lamps. The expanding LED market is expected to keep the lighting business growing at 6 per cent.
