New name for Asean contest

Regional top-flight competition the Tiger Cup has had a name change and next year will be called the Asean Football Championship when the event is co-hosted by Thailand and Singapore.
According to Worawi Makudi, the secretary-general of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT), the Asean Football Federation (AFF) decided to rename the biennial tournament after Singapore-base beer manufacturer Tiger withdrew its sponsorship. The seventh edition of the competition will be held from January 12 to February3 in 2007. The preliminary rounds will be staged in Thailand and Singapore, while the semi-finals and final will use the home-away format. Worawi added that five nations - the Philippines, Laos, Brunei, Cambodia and East Timor - will contest the qualifying rounds and play for two berths in the finals. The qualifying event will be held in the Philippines from November 12-20, with the hosts taking on Laos in the curtain-raiser. Then the draw for the two-group first round will be staged in Thailand on November 27. For the draw, as hosts Thailand will be in different group with Singapore, while other teams will be ranked on the results of the previous two tournaments. Worawi also said that anything less than victory in the tournament - after winning three times, in 1996, 2000 and 2002 - would be a failure for Thailand. "We will use our senior squad for this competition as we target nothing more than the trophy. And this tournament also presents the ideal opportunity for us to prepare our players and officials before we host the Asian Cup at the end of next year," he said.
