30% of kids 'violent': poll

Three out of 10 children aged three to five display violent or anti-social tendencies, according to a Health Systems Research Institute (HSRI) sponsored survey.
Study chief Dr Pornpan Boonyarattapan yesterday revealed the findings showed 30 per cent of Thai youngsters regularly bullied friends and animals. The survey was conducted among 13,808 people in 3,919 families in Bangkok, Nan, Sa Kaew, Amnat Charoen and Yala. The survey covered respondents in several age groups. "We have also discovered about 40 per cent of families engage in verbal or physical violence," Pornpan said. About half of the school students displayed below-average intelligence quotients. So far, she said the survey showed people of all age groups had a fair physical health and good access to medical services. The survey was part of a project to develop reliable indicators to determine health in each community. The HSRI oversees reform in national health services.
