Black Canyon expansion on

Inspired by widespread confidence in next year's economic outlook despite the recent coup, Black Canyon (Thailand) Co Ltd is sticking to its original expansion plan.
The plan features 15 new outlets in Thailand costing Bt5 million to Bt7 million per branch and six new outlets in Cambodia, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates at Bt7 million to Bt8 million each. "After the government is formed, budget disbursement will begin, which will stimulate the economy as a whole," managing director Pravit Chitnarapong said yesterday. Pravit said that while Thais were familiar with the new government leader - retired Army commander General Surayud Chulanont - and will continue to follow their business plans, foreigners might need more time before they feel comfortable with the new government. He said the Kingdom's political situation might have been worse if the coup had not occurred. Black Canyon's confidence is buoyed by the upcoming retail high season and plans to open a temporary restaurant at the International Horticultural Exposition for His Majesty the King, which runs from November 1 to January 31 in Chiang Mai. However, Pravit thought businessmen should put off major investments until the investment direction of international investors was visible and the government finished drafting a new constitution and sets a general election date. Black Canyon has already opened more than 20 new branches this year and intends to open six more by year-end: three in Suvarnabhumi Airport, one in the Esplanade shopping complex, one in Chiang Mai Airport and one in the Big C Supercentre in Lam Luk Ka district of Pathum Thani. This will bring the total number of Thai outlets to 163. Four of the new branches will operate under the company's new brand, Caffe Nero by Black Canyon. Pravit said the new restaurant chain featured a trendier and more modern look and more international food, mainly Italian. Prices at Caffe Nero are about 15 per cent higher than at standard outlets. The company hopes to increase its annual revenues 15 per cent from last year's Bt950 million.
