Fire destroys another school in Northeast

Police have begun an investigation into a fire that destroyed a primary school near the Cambodian border in Buri Ram province on Saturday.

Police Region 3 commander Lt-General Sathaporn Laowthong said yesterday that while it looked like an electrical short-circuit had caused the fire he had not ruled out arson.

The fire came less than a week after arson attacks on a score of schools in Kamphaeng Phet in an apparent gesture of defiance by supporters of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in the recent military coup.

No one was injured in Saturday's fire at the two-storey Baan Kok Tabaeng school in Non Din Daeng district, police said.

Sathaporn ordered increased security measures for schools and government offices in the region.
