Kowit avoids ceremony

Kowit Watana, the national police chief, was conspicuously absent from the ceremony appointing Surayud Chulanont as Thailand's 24th prime minister yesterday.

He was the only member of the Council for National Security (CNS), formerly the Council for Democratic Reform, who failed to show up at the important ceremony at Government House.

On Saturday, the CNS issued an announcement limiting  Kowit's powers and reshuffling the police personnel hierarchy. Kowit incurred the wrath of the CNS after reshuffling dozens of  police personnel with ties to the Thaksin regime to key

positions.
