Thai team placed in world meet

[VOLLEYBALL] Thailand's women's team have been given a place in next year's World Women's Under-20 Championship after China's team withdrew.
The Thai team were due to play for a place in the event in the Asian Women's Under-19 Championships, which start today in Nakhon Ratchasima, but the sport's governing body, the International Volleyball Federation, has given Thailand a place in the world meet after China withdrew. A total of 13 teams are taking part in the Asian championship in Nakhon Ratchasima, with the top two going through to next year's world championships. However, although the Thai girls are now into next year's world meet, they will be trying for a top-four finish in Nakhon Ratchasima. Playing in the Asian Championships are Thailand, New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Group A, while Group B comprises reigning champions China, India and Vietnam. Singapore, Japan and Australia are in Group C, with South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan and Tajikistan in Group D. The Thai girls take on Sri Lanka in the curtain-raiser today, while Taiwan play Indonesia, Tajikistan face South Korea, India meet China and Japan play Australia.
