Interim Constitution approved by royal command

His Majesty the King has signed the interim Constitution, TV pool announced Sunday.
The interim charter takes effect on October 1 until a new constitution is drafted and signed by His Majesty the King.
The royal command, which was announced on TV pool at 9:29 am, states that the Council for Democratic Reform staged the coup to annul the previous charter, which was full of loopholes, so that a new charter could be drafted so His Majesty approved the interim charter pending the drafting of a new one. CDR leader Gen Sonthi Boonyaratglin Sunday morning forwarded the name of Gen Surayud Chulanont for a royal command for the appointment as the interim prime minister. A ceremony for Surayud to receive the royal command will be held at Government House at 4:45 pm. Among other things, the interim charter absolves the CDR for staging the coup. The amnesty is granted I Article 37, which states that the CDR and the military will not be legally accountable for the overthrow of prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
