More violence in the South

Violence continued in the deep South, as an official was shot dead and a bomb explosion injured a police officer yesterday.
Saipudin Muming, 37, a member of the Chernkiri Tambon Administrative Organisation, was found dead on Bankadee-Bantamung Road in Si Sakhon district of Narathiwat yesterday morning. His body was riddled with bullets. Police said he was riding his motorbike to attend a meeting when four gunmen riding in a pickup approached him from behind and opened fire with a shotgun before fleeing the scene. Saipudin died instantly. Around the same time in the centre of Narathiwat's Muang district, a 7-kilogram bomb hidden between a teashop and an aquarium exploded while the shop was crowded with villagers and police. The bomb injured Pol Sgt-Major Wichit Chantrawiboon and partially destroyed the shop, with shrapnel spread in a 30-metre radius. Police suspected Muslim insurgents remotely detonated the bomb with a mobile phone. Also in Narathiwat, suspected Muslim insurgents placed a 5-kilogram bomb under a roadside pavilion on Bacho-Banthon Road in Bacho district. It was detonated, but no one was injured. More than 1,700 people have been killed since the violence re-emerged in the deep South on January 4, 2004.
