Alert over heavy gift

Nervous security guards for the Council for Democratic Reform last night destroyed a suspicious-looking present intended for its chief, General Sonthi Boonyaratglin, only to find out it was in fact a gift.

A woman identifying herself only as Orasa handed the box to a security guard outside Army Command, which houses the CDR's office, and told him to "give it to the Army chief", referring to Sonthi.

Lieutenant Saroj Inthapat, who accepted the box, said there was a card with the message "With love and good wishes". He said the box was heavy and beeped when put through a metal detector.

A bomb disposal unit shot water into the box, causing a loud bang that startled many in the compound. A stainless steel photo frame and book on diseases common in the elderly were found inside.
