Military junta drops 'monarchy' from title after confusion in foreign media
The military group that staged the September 19 coup has dropped the part of its English title that could be translated as suggesting a connection to the monarchy. The Council for Democratic Reform under Constitutional Monarchy will now be known as the Council for Democratic Reform, or CDR, the military junta said in a clarification on its website. Flying Officer Surasan Kongsiri, assistant spokesman of the CDR, said yesterday that reports by certain foreign media indicated that His Majesty the King was behind the coup that toppled the government of Thaksin Shinawatra. "The foreign media don't know that the royal appointment of General Sonthi Boonyaratglin as head of the CDR is part of Thai tradition," said the spokesman. - The Nation. Supreme Administrative Court: Shin case gets the go-ahead The Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) yesterday accepted a dereliction-of-duty complaint against state agencies that failed to scrap concessions given to Shin Corp after Shin was sold to foreigners. Sastra To-on, a lecturer at Rangsit University's Faculty of Law, said he filed the complaint with the Administrative Court in March due to the fact that Shin Corp's concessions were not cancelled after the family of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra sold its stake in Shin to Temasak Holdings of Singapore. - The Nation.
