Four shot dead in Yala and Pattani

Four people were killed in separate incidents as the separatist violence continued to rage in the three southernmost provinces.
Three people were shot dead in the centre of Yala province at noon yesterday, 10 days after the deadly bombings that rocked Hat Yai, the economic hub of tourism and transportation in the deep South, killing four and injuring 70 others. Police said two gunmen riding a motorbike stopped by a grocery shop in Muang district of Yala, pretended to buy a pack of cigarettes before opening fire at the shop owner Rerm Pakdijit, his wife Yard Pakdijit and motorbike taxi-driver Chartchai Sukprasit. Rerm died instantly while the other two were pronounced dead at a local hospital. Police believed Muslim insurgents were behind the attack. In the Mayo district of Pattani, a school janitor Amnuay Nilnam, 44, was shot dead while travelling on a bus to work early yesterday morning. Amnuay, who worked at Sirirachsamakki School, was shot on a bus travelling from Panare to Yala. Witnesses said two gunmen boarded the bus several minutes earlier. They shot Amnuay three times before fleeing. Amnuay died at the scene. More than 1,700 people have been killed since the violence re-emerged in the Muslim-majority South in January 2004.
