DSI gets serious over Somchai

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) had not made much progress in the abduction and suspected murder of Muslim lawyer Somchai Neelaphaijit because the police who first handled the case did not cooperate with the DSI, spokesman Piyawat Kingkate said yesterday.
The DSI has so far inter-viewed 10 police officers. Seven others have asked the DSI to postpone their interviews - because they have more important work to do. "They will be given another few days to meet with us, then we will have to take action against them," the spokesman said. Piyawat said there was a large volume of evidence concerning the disappearance of the high-profile lawyer, who is widely thought to be dead. This includes a large number of mobile phones collected from people suspected of being involved in the case - who the police never questioned. "All 27 DSI investigators handling Somchai's case have been instructed to lay off their other tasks and focus solely on this case," Piyawat said. The DSI also has a new lead that suggested two teams were involved in Somchai's abduction; one responsible for snatching him and another for disposing of his body - by burning it.
