Thaksin unlikely to return soon : Gen Sonthi

The military is in contact with ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra who seemed to agree that it was not quite timing for him to return.

"There is some communication between the (military) council and Thaksin about whether he should return right now," General Sonthi Boonyaratglin told reporters.

"But I think Thaksin can decide for himself. I think Thaksin may not come right now, because he can see that the situation is unstable," he added.

Thaksin was in New York when the military seized power on September 19, and has since gone to London where he has a residence and where his wife joined him Monday.

Sonthi repeated the military's assurances that Thaksin would be allowed to return to Thailand, but warned that he could face prosecution over alleged corruption.

"As a Thai national, he has a right to return," Sonthi said. "But like everyone, he has to follow the law."

Thaksin is now in London after being ousted by the military last week. His wife, Khunying Pochaman left to London on Monday to reunite with him.

The military suspended the constitution and imposed martial law immediately after taking power one week ago.
