TRT is waiting for ban to lift

The Thai Rak Thai Party says its top members will meet to evaluate the political situation as soon as the country is returned to civilian rule.

The Council for Democratic Reform under Constitutional Monarchy (CDRM) has banned all political activity until a civilian administration is imposed.

Thai Rak Thai Party executive board member Veera Musigapong said at a news media briefing the party was prepared to follow CDRM's commands.

"We will not oppose the council and are ready to go along with them," he said.

Veera was responding to rumours that the party was trying to create confusion in the aftermath of the coup.

"When the ban expires we will appoint members to discuss party action after political reform," he said.

Veera said key members kept in touch and were discussing the party summit to be scheduled after October 3.

Veera assumed the ban would expire after that day and party activity would be permitted, based on the CDRM's earlier vow to restore civilian rule within two weeks of the September 19 coup.

He also dismissed a rumour claiming overthrown prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra ordered he and former deputy transport minister Phumtham Wechayachai to keep the party active.

"I have had no command from Thaksin," Veera said. He added key party members had pledged to remain with the organisation.

Party deputy spokesman Jatuporn Promphan said rumours that Thai Rak Thai was a "broken party" were false.

"We have been attacked from many sides including our own members. So, when we have a new government it will be time to evaluate what the party is going to do," he said.

He called on the CDRM to treat all political organisations equally, pointing out that only members of the previous government had been ordered to surrender themselves to the military.

He accused Sondhi Limthongkul, a member of the anti-Thaksin People's Alliance for Democracy, of engaging in political activity when he discussed the political situation before a large audience during his weekly television show over the weekend.
