Thaksin's plane searched after returning to Bangkok
The Thai Airways jet that ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra took to New York was thoroughly searched by Air Force commandos yesterday after it was forced to land at Bangkok's military airport, officials and witnesses said. One of Thaksin's aides on the plane said the heavily armed commandos were searching the plane to make sure the deposed premier was not trying to sneak back into the country. New Regulations: Council issues new orders The Council for Democratic Reform under Constitutional Monarchy (CDRM) issued another three announcements yesterday. The council's 14th announcement said the status of the Parliament ombudsmen will be maintained by reviving the Parliament Ombudsmen Act, which was automatically annulled by the coup. The 15th announcement said the status of the Political Parties Act will be maintained. The 16th announcement empowers the CDRM with parliamentary authority. Return to civilian govt: Parties seek time frame The leaders of two major political parties yesterday urged the military leaders to install a civilian government as soon as possible to prevent Thailand from becoming an outcast in the international community. "A time-frame for putting politics back on course would shore up the country's credibility, and it would be even better if we can meet our goals ahead of schedule," Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said. Chat Thai Party leader Banharn Silapa-archa expressed optimism that democracy would be restored within the shortest time possible.
